Gestural Sculptures

Description

The images below highlight a paper mache figurative sculpture project I taught to foundations in art classes at Gray-New Gloucester High School. I noticed that many high school students are focussed on creating representationally accurate artwork – I created this lesson to encourage students to create more expressive artwork. The lesson centered around the concept of gesture from beginning to start and I reinforced the idea that representations of the human figure don’t need to be realistic through provoking images, demos, and individualized instruction. I chose to highlight this lesson because I feel like it was one of the most developmentally appropriate lessons that I have created and I believe it struck a good balance of challenge and student interest.
