At Gray – New Gloucester High School I had the opportunity to visit the Bowdoin College Special Collections to look at a selection of artist’s books with a mixed media class. This hands on experience helped students to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the broad applications of artist’s books. I used this trip as a springboard to design a book making lesson that centered on student agency and problem solving. I formatted the lesson to integrate demo videos and in-class workshops to expose students to a wide variety of processes that they could choose from to create their final project. Little did I know that a few weeks into the project I would have to restructure it due to the COVID-19 pandemic to adapt to an online learning environment. This put my planning skills to the test as I had to develop tools to track and assess learner progress remotely. Below are a series of video demos I created throughout this lesson.
